(and other historical paperwork)

This image by Benoît Picart shows how Freemasonry had spread around London by 1736. Meeting in pubs and coffee houses, lodges had been opened in Europe and the Americas. Sir Richard Steele is best known for co-founding the periodicals; “The Tatler” in 1709 and “The Spectator” in 1711 alongside his friend Joseph Addison. No one knows why he appears at the head of this image.
